In December 2011, Reliance matched all funds raised by Reliance employees through pledge forms for a total annual donation of $245,886 to the United Way. Donating to the United Way is an annual project for the Reliance team, with a goal of breaking the quarter-million-dollar donation mark during 2012. “In fact, over these past five years, Reliance has contributed over $1 million to causes funded by the United Way,” declares Roger Rossi, President and CEO of Reliance Home Comfort.
Contributing to causes through the United Way is just one of the ways that Reliance aims to participate in and support its employees’ communities. In 2011, Reliance sent 22 employees on a Habitat For Humanity Toronto build day, and participated in the Ontario Home Builders’ Association build project in the Dominican Republic.
Reliance’s commitment to causes within communities is rooted much deeper than an interest in corporate philanthropy, fulfilling the need for an exceptional team to give back as a team. Initiatives like these are organized regularly by an internal “FUNdraising” committee tasked with hosting events and leading the Reliance team through the process of giving back. “We all feel very proud,” says Rossi.
What does “FUNdraising” mean at Reliance? Pumpkin carving, paper airplane competitions, amazing races, golf tournaments, bingo, cupcake sales, and even pie throwing events are just a few examples of previous activities. There really aren’t many opportunities in life where you can throw a pie at your manager’s face, but during these events it’s not only accepted it’s encouraged.
“We have many opportunities every day to tell the Reliance story with pride in a way that is personable, genuine and sets us apart from others. This is just one of our competitive advantages,” explains Rob Jutras, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Reliance, when discussing an annual fundraiser during the summer of 2011. “Together we are able to demonstrate our commitment to the communities we serve.”
So what’s in store for Reliance FUNdraising for 2012? In addition to the quarter-million-dollar goal for the annual United Way donation, Reliance plans on sending 40+ employees to Toronto Habitat for Humanity build days, and future FUNdraising events include an annual golf tournament, hockey games with competitors, and much, much more.
Reliance’s employees are committed to breaking the fundraising records set during 2011, an accomplishment that is only possible as a team. “Our people are the heart and soul of Reliance”, explains Rossi. “One of the many reasons that I’m proud to be part of Reliance is the nature of the people who work here.”
