home comfort

Your home operates like a well-oiled machine, and a big part of that is its ductwork, since that’s the conduit through which air travels to improve your home’s comfort level. Sooner or later, ductwork replacement will become a real possibility. But do you know how to identify when it’s time for replacement? We’ve compiled some tips to help you know for sure:

  • Age of the ducts — Your home’s ducts can be quite resilient, but they won’t last forever. In fact, if the ductwork in your home was originally there when the home was constructed, you can bet that it wasn’t of the greatest quality. As a general rule, ductwork will begin to break down after ten years in the case where you’re still dealing with the original equipment.
  • Exposed areas — Check the joints in areas of your home where the ductwork is exposed, such as your attic and crawlspaces. If the ductwork has been sealed by duct tape, you may be experiencing deterioration. If you can find streaks of dust that are radiating from seams in your ductwork, this indicates areas of air leakage. Plus, there may be evidence of rust and corrosion in the ducts.
  • Air flow – If your ductwork is still performing well, air flow should be generally the same from one room to the next. Improper air flow into certain rooms can indicate damage to sections of the ductwork leading to that area of your home. Another indication of this is temperature variations between the rooms.
  • Duct blower test — This is where things get serious. A duct blower test must be conducted by a trained HVAC technician. This definitive test will determine where your problem areas exist. This method involves a blower fan that pressurizes the ducts to a standard level. Then, pressure sensors take readings that are calculated by a computer to determine where the problem areas lie.
