Make it a staycation!2 min read

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If you’re like me and working to take every step you can to save money while doing your part for the environment, take a few minutes to think about this year’s summer holiday plans and you’ll soon realize that it’s easy to ‘go’ green.  Consider a staycation – a vacation either at or close to home.  The idea may not sound appealing at first blush, but when you take everything into consideration, you’ll soon realize that a staycation can be much more relaxing, and give your wallet and the environment a bit of a holiday too.
The term staycation gained popularity a few years ago when fuel prices soared and many Canadians were forced to reconsider their plans based on travel costs. The term has gained momentum, not only because of cost savings but also the unique and memorable opportunities it brings to you and your family.
My wife and I had considered a trip to Europe to see family this summer, but when we thought about the cost of travel alone ($6,000 +), we decided that we would be better served to make some other arrangements closer to home, and invest that money more wisely. The more thought we put into it, the more attractive the idea of a staycation became.
So when planning this year’s holiday, think about the advantages of a staycation. Here are a few key points to consider:

  • Affordability
  • Convenience
  • Security
  • Environmental Impact

Get online, do some research and plan your ‘home’ vacation. Rediscover your city, plan activities, enjoy a few indulgences that you typically wouldn’t consider and save without sacrificing any of the things that you would enjoy on a traditional getaway.
As always, we’d love your thoughts on this week’s video and post. Have you enjoyed a staycation in the past? Share your stories with us in the comments section; we’d love to hear about what you did and how much you’ve saved!

Love doing short "weekend trips" to places nearby. There are so many cool areas not very far from where we are, that it is nice to get away - even if just for the day or weekend. :) I do want to do a train trip one of these days though, maybe a Grand Canyon one, but until then, lots to do around here.

I completely agree. There are so many interesting and undiscovered destinations close to home for so many of us - all it takes is a little research. As you mentioned, even short trips for a day or two can be a lot of fun for the whole family (throw in the savings & environmental benefits and it's really a no-brainer). Your plan for a Grand Canyon train trip sounds fantastic! Hope you get a chance to do so very soon.
