For me, summer is all about making the most of the nice weather, getting outdoors with the kids and having some fun in the sun – but along with all that fun I can’t help but be aware of the risks of skin damage and the annoyance of all of those pesky insects. This summer has been especially hot and humid and these conditions increase the risk of burns as well as exposure to insects. Neither is to be taken lightly.

Growing up, I wasn’t concerned about the harmful effects of UV rays, instead I would ‘baste’ myself in oil as opposed to protecting myself with sunscreen – live and learn as they say. I’m now much older (and a little wiser) and understand the negative effects that the sun can have on my skin and my health. As a father of two young children, I have a completely new perspective when it comes to protecting their skin as well as my own but it’s not as simple as slathering on the sunscreen and dousing ourselves with insect repellant.

When selecting your sun screen, be sure to educate yourself as to the possible risks associated with traditional products and seek natural alternatives that will provide adequate protection. When it comes to insect repellents, take the same approach and avoid products which contain DEET and instead, custom make your own natural repellent.

Check out this week’s video for 5 quick tips on how to stay safe and comfortable in the summer sun! As always, we’d love to hear from you.
