Summertime is Travel Time: Here’s How to Make it Special

With more than half of Canadians set to travel this summer and three-quarters of those staying in Canada for their holidays, millions of us will be unearthing fantastic sites from coast to coast to coast and making new memories along the way with family and friends.

Among some of the destinations expected to be the most popular this month and next are Canada’s national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites – thanks to Parks Canada’s free Discovery Pass to celebrate Canada 150. It’s a great way to explore, learn, have fun and appreciate the vast beauty of our land.

Summer’s long days and warm temperatures also make it an ideal time to visit northern parts of the country that usually feel a bit off limits to us “southern” folks most of the year. For instance, Yukon in summer is the land of the midnight sun with near 24-hour light, endless virtually untouched vistas, mighty rivers, and millions of birds and wildflowers. Experience memorable places like the North Klondike Highway along the route of Gold Rush stampeders or quiet campgrounds and hikes along the Silver Trail. It’s just one of thousands of unique and all-Canadian vacations waiting to be discovered.

Wherever you head to this month or the rest of the summer, remember to always play it safe and energy-smart when you’re away from home. Make sure your thermostat is properly set to be as energy-efficient as possible – in fact, a lot of energy is wasted heating and cooling empty homes. A Nest Learning Thermostat, for instance, can program itself automatically, save energy while you’re away and all year long, plus you can even control it remotely using your phone, tablet or laptop.
