Upgrading your furnace is not an easy decision and many homeowners put it off until there’s a catastrophic breakdown, which is usually when they need their furnace most. Planning a replacement ahead of time, however, avoids the discomfort and inconvenience of a cold house and steers you clear of being forced to make a hasty decision.

There are four main factors to weigh when considering a furnace upgrade

1. Age: A furnace’s average useful life is approximately 15 to 20 years.

2. Efficiency: Furnace energy efficiency is rated by how much of the fuel it consumes is used directly for heating homes. A rating of 80 means the furnace uses 80 percent of the fuel it consumes to heat a home.  By upgrading to a unit with a higher AFUE, you could start saving money on heating bills immediately. Some new furnaces reach nearly 98 percent efficiency.

3. Repair: If you’ve spent or are facing repair costs that equal 40 percent of the cost of a new system, it’s usually a better option to replace the old one.

4. Safety: Since combustion furnaces use fuel to heat your home, safety is a primary consideration and one of the most important reasons to have the system serviced annually by an HVAC professional.
