Keep Your Home Safe From Severe Winter Weather

Home in winter weather

There’s no avoiding it: winter is on its way. Before the severe weather hits, however, it’s a good idea to make sure your home is ready so it doesn’t suffer any damage from the snow, sleet, rain, wind and cold temperatures.

Here are four important ways to keep your home safe in the coming months:

  1. No snow on the roof

Watch your roof for snow buildup, especially on the downwind section. This is where snow tends to blow and it can build up a lot of stress. Call in a professional to remove snow that’s piling up – it will help avoid damage to your roof and putting yourself or your family at risk.

  1. Attic ventilation

By keeping your attic well ventilated so it’s at a similar temperature to the outdoors, you’ll reduce the likelihood of ice dams forming. These can damage your home when the water melts – as can a warm attic, which also melts snow on the roof, causing water damage.

  1. Seal the air leaks

In the winter, cold air can damage exposed parts of your home, especially on nights when the temperature is well below freezing. Carefully survey around your home for serious air leaks and seal them with caulk or silicone sealant, as needed.

  1. Call on a furnace inspection pro

Don’t wait till it’s too late. Get your heating system checked out now, before the temperature drops. If you don’t, a major malfunction could leave you without heat, a danger to both your family and your home when it’s freezing outside.
