How to Transition Your Home from Summer to Fall

Autumn Leaves in the Gutter and on a shingled roof of a house.

Cleaning, trimming and tuning up: Here’s your sure-fire autumn checklist
While we long for summer while we’re in the depths of winter, the truth is, for many of us, it’s autumn that’s our favourite season. Comfortable days, crisp evenings, technicolour foliage, Thanksgiving, Halloween… we can’t get enough!
Autumn though is also time to get ready for the inevitable transition to the cooler – and downright colder – temperatures on their way. Here’s a checklist to help you prepare this season:

Clean out the gutters

It’s essential to keep your gutters and eavestroughs clean and clear of debris. This can prevent water damage, ice dams and the build-up of potentially hazardous icicles.

Overseed your lawn
As the weather cools, it’s time to repair thin or bare spots on your lawn. In fact, overseeding during cooler nights and milder days can promote grass seed germination.

Trim the trees

Trees that grow too close to your home or power lines can cause damage later due to ice buildup or heavy wind. Make sure to do your trimming now, before the rain and sleet and snow arrive.

Check your chimney

Inspect your fireplace for soot or creosote build-up. Creosote is a gummy, highly combustible substance and can be a hazard in homes with wood burning fireplaces. It’s a great idea to hire a professional chimney sweep for a good scrubbing.

Inspect windows and doors

Cracks or gaps around windows or doors can let a lot of heat escape from your home. Seal or apply weather stripping as needed to keep your energy bill under control.

Test safety equipment

There’s nothing more important than your family’s safety. Now’s the time to perform annual checks on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and other items. While you’re at it, clear away fire hazards, like old cardboard boxes, newspapers and other items.
