Can you stay cool without an A/C? 5 tips plus your chance to win…

stay cool 600x400

Are you feeling the heat and you don’t have a working air conditioner? While living through the summer without air conditioning seems impossible it can be done. Try these simple tips to help you stay comfortable and cool when your AC cannot:

  • Avoid using appliances that give off heat like the oven, dishwasher, computer and dryer until later in the day when it’s cooler outside.

  • Don’t load your fridge and freezer with food and drinks, both appliances produce a lot of heat.

  • Move to the lowest level of your home, as hot air rises.

  • Close drapes and blinds of your home; use white drapes, dark drapes heat up easily.

  • Close windows during the day to keep hot air outside and open them at night.

  • Don’t shower cold! It seems refreshing, cold water closes your pores though and activates your body heating.

  • Put your feet in a bucket with cold water, this helps to cool your body down.

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

  • Reduce strenuous activities to avoid exhaustion.

Now it’s your turn. Share your tips below in the comment section for staying cool this summer and for your chance to win a $100.00 3V VISA Prepaid Voucher.

Close the curtains during the hottest time of the day and descend into the basement.

I have a few tips on avoiding turning the A/C on…
    – keep the central air on without turning on the A/C. This helps circulate cold air in the basement throughout your home
    – keep blinds closed to keep the hot sun out
    – close all windows to keep the humid air out
    – home made lemonade: 4 lemons, 4 table spoons of sugar, 4 litres of cold water
    – home made iced tea: 2 bags of tea (earl grey is great but anything works), 4 table spoons of sugar, 4 litres of cold water (will need time to percolate)
    – dress for the temperature (light colours and short sleeves)
    – hiding in the basement/man cave
    – drink room temperature water (cold water causes your internal temperature to increase in order to properly digest the cold liquid)

  • Meghan July 24, 2015, 10:21 pm

I freeze grapes, and munch on them… or drop them in a glass of chilled wine. It helps keep it cooler, and it tastes good!

Cool off by the lake always a little cooler. Drink lots of cold water. Don’t over exert yourself!

  • Ethel Galvin July 24, 2015, 10:50 am

Turn the fan on your furnace to bring the cool air from the basement up to the main level

  • Anish July 24, 2015, 10:18 am

Jump in a pool and if the pool has a heater leave it off; if it has a solar blanket leave it off as well. The overnight cool can sometimes keep the water cooler and it can be very refreshing especially on very hot and humid days!

Mary and I wear loose, light coloured clothes and stay in the shade. We open the windows at night to cool the house, and close them in the morning before the day heats up.

When it seems too hot to do anything, I go to the mall, to a movie, or if it’s a long heatwave I’ll go visit out-of-town close friends or relatives (who have air conditioning) for a few days (since it’s too hot to do housework/yardwork etc).

Turn off the ac and hang out in the basement instead.

  • Krystal July 23, 2015, 3:29 pm

I make ice cubes and put them in the blender and add fresh fruit or juice. That or i make home made ice caps. This way my spouse and I along with the kids can enjoy them. To cool those that can not drink the above (babies younger then 6months) I give them cold water in a bottle or chill their toys/blanket(not to much)

This is the dumbest advice I have ever seen.

Refrigerators & freezers are more efficient when full.

Cold showers bad???? That’s just stupid!

  • Tom Marshall July 23, 2015, 3:01 pm

Turn the garden hose on myself once in a while when washing the car or watering lawn/garden.

Hat, sunglasses and spray bottle with cold water to spray yourself as needed.

  • Susan Freeman July 23, 2015, 1:48 pm

An hour before going to be turn air conditioner on to cool the room. Turn off before you go to bed and the room will be cool enough to fall asleep. No need to have the AC on all night.
