4 Benefits of Ductless Split Air Conditioners

Split AC system

If you’re considering upgrading your air conditioning system or adding one to your home, cottage or apartment, a ductless split system can be a great choice. Offering an alternative to central air that runs through a home’s ductwork, these systems provide zoned heating and cooling through ductless means. Here are the benefits of installing a ductless split air conditioning system:

1. Easy installation

A ductless split air conditioner can be easily integrated into your space, since the connection between the outdoor unit and indoor air handler requires no more than a three or four-inch hole drilled into an exterior wall or conduit. The system can be installed from start to finish in one day, in contrast to central air that would require the installation of ductwork in a home that doesn’t already have it.

2. Energy efficient

Because of potential duct leaks, a typical residential HVAC system can lose a significant amount of the heating and cooling entering a home over the course of its lifetime – a problem that you won’t have with a ductless split system. Additionally, because each zone in a ductless system has its own thermostat, you will only need to condition any one space when it is being occupied, potentially saving you money on your energy bill. While the exact savings will be determined by the amount that the units are used, it’s estimated to be around 20-30 percent per month.

3. Great for small spaces

Designed to fill the gap between central systems and window air conditioners, ductless split air conditioners are an ideal cooling solution for small living spaces, including apartments and dorm rooms. They’re also a good choice to cool individual rooms in larger homes that are not ventilated as well as others, like basements and attics.

4. More control

Targeting and control are two main benefits of a ductless split system. These units can usually be placed where you want them, even replacing old window style units to provide more control over particular zones. No longer will you have to set one temperature for the entire home, cottage or building, instead having the ability to target the areas you want, providing more comfort and saving money and energy usage.

There are many different split air conditioner options out there, so it’s important to find the right option for your needs. Here are some important things to look out for:

  • SEER – the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating measures the efficiency of your system. The higher the number, the more efficient the system is at converting electricity into cooling power.
  • ENERGY STAR® Certification – this certification is the mark of high-efficiency products. Choose a certified split air conditioning system to keep long-term energy costs down.
  • Warranty – as with any HVAC system or home appliance, it’s important to find the warranty that fits your budget and needs.

I know a few buildings that have these machines. It is 100% electronic and it plugs into a wall? I would like to cut down on gas and I am hoping this will help a little bit.
