Your HVAC furnace system has been working hard all winter long, but come summer, you’ll switch over to cooling off your home. Spring is the time to make sure the entire system is maintained and ready to go for the summer. Certainly, you can call in the professionals to do a spring maintenance tune-up for your furnace system, and they will make sure everything is running right. But there are some things you can do that will save a little money and give you some peace of mind.
- Check the filter – This is one of the easiest and user friendly maintenance tasks that can be done by the homeowner, it is easy to do and will make sure your furnace is running at peak efficiency. Simply take the filter out of the filter box and hold it up to a light source. If you can’t readily see through it, it needs to be changed. That’s all there is to it.
- Check your electronic thermostat – If the temperature has been fluctuating or it won’t seem to hold whenever you dial it in, the chances are that the battery in the electronic thermostat needs to be changed. Make this a yearly spring event and just change the battery each spring as a matter of course. You’ll never have to worry about thermostat problems again.
- Check the belt on the blower – It should be aligned between the pulleys and there should be no squealing when running. If the belt is pitted and cracked, it needs to be replaced. Also, vacuum off the blower fan blades to remove built-up dirt.
- Check all the ductwork to make sure it is connected correctly with no leaking at the seams.
Keep the area around your furnace system clean and always make sure nothing is blocking the registers to maintain unimpeded airflow.
