Using energy efficient appliances is an easy way to reduce your home’s energy bill. However, you can also save money on the new appliances if you choose those that are recognized by Energy Star. In an effort to encourage more homeowners to choose energy efficient products, many appliance retailers offer significant discounts and rebates on furnaces, air conditioners, ventilation systems, and other appliances that are labeled with Energy Star’s symbol.
Energy Star was developed in the United States in 1992 by the Environmental Protection Agency and was adopted by Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency in 2001. The Energy Star label has evolved to symbolize the highest level of energy efficiency. Generally, appliances that are recognized by the program are 20 percent more efficient than non-recognized appliances.
New homes can even by Energy Star-certified if they meet a certain criteria of energy efficiency. Generally, homes that meet the criteria use a wide variety of products that are recognized by the program, including air conditioner, furnace, windows, doors, insulation, and indoor appliances that require less energy to run properly.
