Planning an HVAC maintenance call? 5 steps will get you ready for service.

Too many homeowners disregard the importance of HVAC maintenance, which can lead to system inefficiency, higher energy bills and preventable problems down the road. For this reason, we have compiled five steps that you can take before the visit to help it go more smoothly:

  1. Troubleshoot before calling for help. Some problems with your HVAC unit may be fixable without the help of a professional. Consult the troubleshooting area of your system’s manual and analyze the problem before scheduling service.
  2. Know your unit’s model number and brand. This information is located on the unit. The technician will be able to find this out for himself, but if you provide it to him before he makes the trip out to your house, he’ll already have an idea of the specific unit he’ll be dealing with, which can help speed up the call.
  3. Make note of any issues you’ve noticed. If you’ve been hearing sounds or smelling odors coming from the unit, make note of them. The more information you can provide to the technician upon his arrival, the more thorough the service call. This will save both time and money.
  4. Be aware of where your equipment’s located. The service call will take longer if you don’t know where everything is—not only the specific HVAC unit that you’re calling about, but things like your thermostat and circuit breaker. If the technician doesn’t have to search for those things, his job will be a lot easier.
  5. Remove any blockage. If your HVAC equipment is blocked by furniture, boxes or anything else, make sure these items have been moved before the service call begins. While the technician will move them in order to get to the unit, it will slow down the process. Also be sure that the unit is accessible if it is located in your basement or within a closet.
