Summer is finally here and for many this means it’s time for a much-needed vacation. If you are planning a getaway, you deserve to know that your home is safe while you’re away. There are several things you can do to protect your home and decrease the chances of returning to the unwelcome news of a break-in or worse.
Vacations are beneficial to our well-being. In order to reap the benefits of a vacation it is important to relax, unwind and leave all of your worries behind. The thought of leaving your home unattended for a period of time can be worrisome, but worry no more because we are here to help. By following these simple steps to help protect your home, you can have peace of mind while on vacation:
Appoint a Contact Person: Ask a trusted friend, family member or neighbour to check on your house frequently while you are away. Provide them with a key to your home as well as your vacation contact info. Have this person collect your mail and newspapers (if you don’t cancel them) so they are not left on your front porch (a major indicator that no one is home).
Lock Windows and Doors: We’re stating the obvious here, but make sure all entry points into your home are securely locked, including the garage door. Place strips of wood to block your windows and sliding door frames from opening in order to prevent easy access to your home. Also, if you tend to keep your window coverings open, either leave them open or draw them half-shut.
Lights On, Lights Off: Nothing screams “No one’s home!” more than an unlit home. Set a few lights around your house on timers to give it that lived-in look. You may also want to consider installing motion sensor lighting around the perimeter of your home. These are a great deterrent for would-be burglars. They are also good for the environment and your wallet because they cut down on electricity usage.
There are a few other things you may want to consider doing to protect your home when you go on vacation, including leaving your car(s) in the driveway, and having your lawn mowed and garden tended too in your absence. If you really want, you could even have a close friend or family member housesit for you while you’re away.
