How to allergy-proof your home

Warm weather brings countless benefits — but it also has a downside, especially for allergy sufferers. If you’re worried about spring allergy symptoms, take these steps to allergy-proof your home.

Air Conditioner

Your air conditioner will probably get a real workout in the months ahead, so it’s a good idea to start the season with a clean filter, and have a few extras on hand for the summer. Filters remove dust and other allergens from the air, but they don’t do a very good job when they get dirty. It also helps to upgrade to more efficient filters, with a MERV rating of at least 9.

Carpet

Carpets can hold a ton of dust, as well as providing an ideal home for dust mites. Vacuuming weekly will help keep this potential allergy nightmare under control. If you have upholstered furniture and heavy drapes, it’s a good idea to vacuum them regularly as well.

Bedding

This is another place where dust mites can potentially thrive. Allergy-proof covers for pillows and mattresses can help keep the little critters at bay, and you can kill them by washing your bedding weekly in 55-degree water.

Bathroom

Your bathroom has the potential to support a lot of mold growth. The best way to control mold is to control moisture, so be sure to run your bathroom vent fan during and for a few minutes after showering. If you see mold growing, remove it by scrubbing with a solution of water and bleach.

Air Ducts

The list of particles that can build up in air ducts over time is a long one, and includes such irritating particles as dust, dust mites, mold, insect waste and pollen. Having your ducts cleaned out periodically can help keep your air clean.

Windows

Opening windows provides fresh air and minimizes mold growth, but check the pollen count before opening them to avoid inviting unwanted allergens into your home.
