QuickTips Summer Series #2: Home Safety

The last thing you want when returning from a summer getaway is to discover that your home has been broken into and your valuables have been stolen. But for thousands of Canadians, each summer brings this nightmare scenario to reality.

In 2009, there were over 200,000 police-reported cases of break and enter offences, and most of these occurred during broad daylight throughout the warmer months. Makes sense doesn’t it? Are you going on holiday anytime soon? The kids are out of school, the weather is at its best (though I prefer spring) and many of us are planning on some quality time away with the family.

But before you go, think about a few quick ways to better protect your home while you’re away. In our earlier Home Safety video, we touched on many ways to protect yourself, but when summer arrives, and your home is unoccupied and looks like an easy target – the risk of a break-in is much greater.

Check out this week’s video for 5 quick ways to keep your home safe during your weekend getaway or summer holiday. What steps do you take to protect your home while you’re away? As always, we’d love to hear from you.

Hi Rich,
I was on a service call today, and I shared with my client about this article.
Your article helped me to strike a long conversation about home safety, and in the process the client recommended that I call his brother for an AC rental.
Keep up the good work, and keep writing.
Thanks – Jafari Cool
